Aalborg → Copenhagen → Colombo via Istanbul · 22 Feb – 24 Mar 2027 · family of four

Sri Lanka, Winter 2027

Seven bases in 28 nights in Sri Lanka, moving clockwise from the airport through the cultural triangle and the hills, an optional two nights in the Sinharaja rainforest, then eleven to thirteen slow nights on the south coast, a last night by the airport, and one night in Istanbul on the way home. Every Sri Lankan base has a pool and a hotel at three price levels: budget, comfort and upgrade.

Before booking anything

  • The hill-country train is partly closed, and got worse in October. Cyclone Ditwah (Nov 2025) cut the line. A landslide on 25 Oct 2026 stopped Rambukkana–Peradeniya–Gampola, and by 26 Oct the suspension covered the whole Main Line from Gampola to Nanu Oya. Peradeniya–Kandy stays shut while the Black Bridge is rebuilt. Only Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla runs, with short landslide stops (one on 4 Nov). Engineers hope to reopen Nawalapitiya–Badulla "by December", but that is an estimate. The plan below already drives Kandy → Nanu Oya and takes the train from there, which is the prettiest stretch anyway, so nothing changes. Re-check in Jan 2027 at byc.lk, and keep the driver's Ella drop-off as the fallback if Nanu Oya–Ella stops too.

How the route was chosen

Sri Lanka rewards the clockwise loop: airport, ancient cities, tea hills, safari, then coast. That order front-loads the driving and the early mornings into the first two weeks, when everyone is fresh, and leaves 12 beach nights at the end with no alarm clocks. Every transfer is under four hours, and the last base is two hours from the airport on the expressway. The Istanbul night on the way home breaks the journey, and Turkish Airlines pays for the hotel.

Negombo

23 – 25 Feb · 2 nights, and again 22 – 23 Mar · 1 night20–40 min from the airportBeach and lagoon town, west coast

Places nearby

  • Negombo beach 5–15 min
Long and wide, fine for a walk and a sunset, not the best swimming. The fishing boats land at the north end in the morning.
  • Lellama fish market 15 min
Open-air market by the lagoon, busiest 06:00–09:00. Drying fish on the sand, boats coming in. Free, and the kids will remember the smell.
  • Dutch canal 10 min
Boat or a walk along the 1700s canal that runs through town. Short and easy.
  • Muthurajawela wetland 30 min
Two-hour boat safari through mangroves: monitor lizards, crocodiles, kingfishers. A gentle first taste of wildlife.
  • St Mary's church and the old town 10 min
Negombo is Catholic. Painted ceilings, a Sunday-morning atmosphere, small shops around it.
  • The lagoon at the hotel
Pedal boats, fishing and cycling from Villa Hundira. Enough for two lazy days.

Good to know

  • Treat this stop as a pool stop. Nothing needs booking.
  • Buy the SIM at the airport on arrival (Dialog counter, expect a queue) or use an eSIM.
  • Ask the driver to collect you around 08:00 on 25 Feb, so you reach Sigiriya for a late lunch and the pool.
  • Come back here for the last night, 22–23 Mar. The flight home leaves 09:15, and Turkish wants you there 3 h before: a 05:45 departure from Negombo, 03:30 from Talpe. Book the same hotel, or The Wallawwa as a send-off.

An 18th-century manor in seven acres of jungle garden, widely called the best airport hotel in the country. Pricey for two nights, but it is the one place on this list where the arrival itself becomes a memory.

Also worth a look

  • Cheaper still: Negombo has many guesthouses under 390 kr a room, but few with a usable pool. Villa Araliya is the floor for this brief.
  • Skipped: Jetwing Lagoon is now adults-only. Jetwing Beach, Heritance Negombo and Goldi Sands are large resorts.

Sigiriya

25 Feb – 1 Mar · 4 nights≈ 4 h from NegomboCultural triangle, dry-zone jungle

Places nearby

  • Sigiriya Rock 5–15 min
The 5th-century fortress on a 200 m rock: frescoes, the mirror wall, the lion paws and a summit with the whole plain below. About 1.200 steps, fine for 9 and 12. Go at 07:00 before the heat and the queues. Tickets 230 kr adult, 130 kr child, online at eservices.ccf.gov.lk.
  • Pidurangala 10 min
The neighbouring rock. A shorter, scramblier climb with the classic view of Lion Rock. Best at sunrise or the last hour before sunset. About 20 kr.
  • Dambulla cave temples 30 min
Five painted caves full of Buddhas, 150 steps up. Shoulders and knees covered. About 40 kr.
  • Elephant safaris 30–45 min
Minneriya and Kaudulla are the famous ones, afternoon jeeps 14:30–18:00, about 1.600–1.950 kr all-in for four. Hurulu Eco Park is cheaper and less crowded with similar odds in Feb–Mar.
  • Village day 10 min
Bullock cart, catamaran across the tank, rice and curry cooked over a fire in a mud house. Touristy but the kids like it. Hiriwadunna is the usual village.
  • Polonnaruwa 1.5 h
The medieval capital, best seen by bicycle. Half a day plus the drive. Skip it unless someone is keen on ruins.
  • Ritigala 45 min
Ruined forest monastery on a mountain, quiet, shaded, no crowds. A good half-day if the rock was a hit.

Good to know

  • Four nights leaves room for two early starts and two pool days.
  • Monkeys visit every pool here. Keep room windows closed and food inside.
  • Anuradhapura is 2 h away. Not worth it with children on this trip.

Good to know

  • Elephant Transit Home, Udawalawe 1.5 h
Orphaned elephants fed at 09:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00, seen from a viewing platform. About 30 kr. Pair it with an Udawalawe drive.

Good to know

  • Yala Block 1 is open in March. It closes mid-Sep to mid-Oct.
  • Yala is the leopard lottery: good odds in March, but a sighting can mean 20 jeeps round one tree. Udawalawe is near-certain elephant herds in open grassland, half the queue, cheaper. For a 9-year-old, Udawalawe is the safer win. Yala has the better lodges.
  • Both parks are about 2 h from Hiriketiya, so the swap costs nothing in driving. Udawalawe half-day for four about 950–1.150 kr.
  • If you add the Sinharaja nights, Udawalawe is the better pairing: 1.5 h to Deniyaya against 2.5–3 h from Yala.
  • Book the full-day jeep through the hotel and ask for a packed breakfast.

Sinharaja rainforest optional

9 – 11 Mar · 2 nights2.5–3 h from Yala, 1.5 h from Udawalawe, 2 h to HiriketiyaDeniyaya, southern edge of the UNESCO forest, 400–1.000 m, wet

Places nearby

  • Pitadeniya entrance and the waterfalls trail 25 min on foot from the Hideaway
The southern gate. Two to three hours with a compulsory guide past three waterfalls and a swimming hole, mostly flat, fine for 9 and 12. Go at 07:00, when the birds are out and before the day groups arrive. Park entry plus guide about 350–500 kr for four; the lodge books it.
  • Gin river and Pena Ella falls at the door
The Hideaway sits on the river facing the falls. Rock pools for swimming, no current to speak of in March. This is the pool at this stop.
  • Night walk from the lodge
Torches after dinner for tree frogs, geckos and the occasional snake. Sinharaja has more endemic frogs than anywhere on the island. The 12-year-old will want the camera.
  • Longer treks full day
Six to seven hours through primary forest to the Kudawa side, or up to the Sinhagala peak. Not with the kids on this trip.
  • Tea estates around Deniyaya 10–20 min
Small, steep, almost no tourists. A factory visit if Ella did not cover it.

Good to know

  • February and March are Sinharaja's driest months, which still means rain on most days. Pack the Ella fleeces, rain jackets and one set of clothes you do not mind ruining.
  • Leeches are the deal: fewer in the dry season, but present. Leech socks from the ticket office, salt in a pocket, long trousers tucked in. Never pull one off, dab it with salt or repellent.
  • No pool hotel here matches the rest of the trip. The reward is the river, the noise of the forest at night and one real jungle walk, not a pool day.
  • Where it fits: only between the safari and the coast. From Ella it is 4–5 h of winding road, and as a day trip from Talpe it is 2.5 h each way. Kanneliya, 1.5 h from Talpe, stays the day-trip rainforest if you skip this stop.
  • Cost: two cheap nights replace two beach nights, and the driver stays two extra days. Net effect on the budget is within about 500 kr in every column, see the row in the budget table.
  • The Pitadeniya side is the easy one. Kudawa, the northern entrance near Kalawana, has the classic treks and Boulder Garden, but it is on the wrong side of the forest for a route coming from the south.

Good to know

  • Swim here: Hiriketiya inner cove, Dickwella beach, Goyambokka coves.
  • Do not swim: Tangalle main beach, Medaketiya, Marakolliya, Rekawa. Steep shelving and undertow, no lifeguards, drownings every year.
  • Conditions change within a few hundred metres. Ask the hotel before going in, every day.
  • A week with no plan is the point of this stop. Five nights still leaves surf lessons, turtles and two empty days; if the beach matters more than the rainforest, skip Sinharaja and keep seven.

Istanbul

23 – 24 Mar · 1 nightCMB 09:15 → IST 15:45, 9 hSultanahmet · 45–60 min from the airport

An evening and a morning

  • Sultanahmet square walk
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome share one square. Both mosques admit visitors in the evening between prayers; the Blue Mosque is free, Hagia Sophia charges foreign visitors for the upper gallery. Cover shoulders and knees, head scarves for women (loan ones at the door), shoes off.
  • Basilica Cistern 5 min
The lit underground cistern with the Medusa heads, open into the evening. The one thing the kids will still be talking about at Easter.
  • Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar 10 min
The Grand Bazaar closes at 19:00, so it depends on when the taxi drops you. The Spice Bazaar at Eminönü keeps similar hours, is smaller, and is the easier one with children.
  • Dinner walk
Köfte at Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi, pide and lahmacun anywhere along Divanyolu, then baklava at Hafiz Mustafa. Budget 400–600 kr for four.
  • Morning ferry 10 min
If the hotel is near Eminönü and the bags are packed: the 20-minute ferry to Kadıköy and back, with tea and simit on board, is the cheapest Bosphorus cruise there is. Only with the airport taxi already booked.

Good to know

  • The layover is 20 h 05, which clears the 20-hour minimum for Turkish Airlines' Stopover in Istanbul programme: one free night in a 4-star hotel with breakfast for every economy passenger on a Turkish Airlines return ticket (ticket number starting 235; fare classes N and R excluded, yours is U). Apply on the Turkish Airlines site at least 72 hours before the flight, ideally the day the ticket is issued. The airline offers a short list of hotels, see the table below. Transfers are not included.
  • Turkey is visa-free for Danish passports for up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for 150 days from entry, so until about 20 Aug 2027.
  • Istanbul Airport is 40–50 km from the old city. Taxi 45–60 min, about 350–500 kr for four with bags. The Havaist bus to Sultanahmet is about 40 kr a head and takes about 90 min.
  • Landing 15:45 means the hotel at about 17:30 and dusk soon after. Late March is 6–15 °C and often wet, and it will feel cold after four weeks at 32 °C. Keep the Ella fleeces in the hand luggage.
  • Morning: leave the hotel by 07:45 for the 11:50 flight; Turkish asks for 3 h at the airport on international flights. The international departures hall at Istanbul is enormous and the walk to the gate is long, so do not cut it finer.
  • If the stopover application is refused, Touristanbul is the fallback: free guided city tours from the airport for layovers of 6–24 h, registered at the Touristanbul desk on arrival. Then an airport hotel for the night.

  3. This weekApply to the school for ekstraordinær frihed via Aula; four weeks needs the skoleleder's approval. Apply for the Stopover in Istanbul hotel for the night of 23 Mar on booking VTBJVW, and hold a free-cancellation Sultanahmet room as backup. Decide the two open choices, Sinharaja yes or no and Yala or Udawalawe, since the hotels and the driver depend on them.
  4. Nov 2026, nowEmail the small hotels for Feb–Mar 2027 rates and hold rooms. This was planned for October, so start with the ones that fill first: Why House, Buckingham Place, Roo Mansala, Villa Hundira and The Wallawwa. Ask each for a direct-booking family rate, free cancellation until the school answers, and child policies in writing. Have a second choice ready for each.
  5. Nov 2026Book the driver for 23 Feb – 9 Mar, or to 11 Mar with Sinharaja. Send the full route and hotel list. Agree the daily rate incl. fuel and driver lodging, and what the tip expectation is. Select SAS seats and add Miles&Smiles numbers to the Turkish booking.
  6. Dec 2026Book the remaining hotels, and the coastal transfers through the Hiriketiya and Talpe hotels.
  7. Jan 2027Check the rail status, both Kandy–Nanu Oya and Nanu Oya–Ella. Check the flight times on VTBJVW in the Turkish Airlines app; some trackers list TK1131 at 07:55 or 08:25 rather than 09:15, which would move the Negombo departure earlier. Book whale watching and the Yala full-day jeep through the hotel. Reserve a Weligama surf school.
  8. Mon 1 Feb 2027Nanu Oya → Ella train seats for 3 Mar go on sale 30 days ahead at 09:00 Sri Lanka time (04:30 in Denmark) at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk. First-class observation or second-class reserved. Or ask the Kandy hotel to book. Sells out within hours.
  9. Early Feb 2027ETA at eta.gov.lk for all four (free). Check the Istanbul stopover hotel confirmation is on the booking. Sigiriya tickets online. Universal plug adapter (types D, G, M). Order LKR or plan ATM withdrawals at arrival (Bank of Ceylon or People's Bank have the lowest fees).

Practical

Weather

  • Coast, Feb–Mar: 31–33 °C days, 24 °C nights, calm sea, about 50 mm rain a month. Peak dry season.
  • Sigiriya: hot and dry, 30–33 °C. Climb early.
  • Kandy: 28 °C days, 20 °C nights.
  • Ella: 19–24 °C days, 10–14 °C nights, mostly dry with occasional mist. Bring a fleece.
  • Sinharaja: 24–28 °C, humid, rain on most days even in March, which is the driest month. Over 4.000 mm a year.
  • Yala: hot, dry, dusty. Best leopard months.
  • Istanbul, late March: 6–15 °C and often wet. Keep the Ella fleeces and a rain jacket each in the hand luggage for the last day.

Health

  • Sri Lanka has been malaria-free since 2016. Dengue exists year-round: DEET repellent, long sleeves at dusk.
  • SSI recommends Hep A plus a tetanus/diphtheria booster, and typhoid for stays over two weeks. Rabies and Hep B are worth discussing with children and monkeys involved.
  • Do not drink tap water. Bring your own basic medicines. The EU health card is not valid, so insurance is essential.
  • Sea safety on the south coast is the biggest real risk. Follow the swim notes at each base.

Money and phones

  • Cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants. Cash (LKR) for tuk-tuks, local food, tips and park fees.
  • ATMs give 40.000–100.000 LKR per withdrawal, fee 300–500 LKR, sometimes free at state banks.
  • Tipping: 10 % service is usually already on hotel bills. Safari jeep driver 1.000–1.500 LKR, your driver 30–65 kr a day, in rupees.
  • One Dialog SIM from the airport counter plus eSIMs for the others is the easy setup. PickMe is the ride-hailing app.

Getting around

  • A driver for the first 15 days, 17 with Sinharaja, is the right call: the inland legs are long and the driver doubles as guide and fixer. On the coast a driver sits idle, so switch to transfers and tuk-tuks.
  • Driver marketplaces and agencies: Red Dot Tours (upmarket, ATOL), Lanka Tours & Transfers, srilankadriversbooking.com, Ceylon Route. Avoid the very cheapest daily rates; those drivers earn on shop commissions.
  • Power: 230 V, plug types D, G and M. Danish plugs need an adapter.
  • School: four weeks outside the holidays is ekstraordinær frihed under folkeskoleloven §39 and is at the school leader's discretion. Apply early.

Family blogs worth reading

Real trips by families with children. Most of them travelled with toddlers, so their pace is slower than yours will be: with a 9- and 12-year-old you can add the Sigiriya climb, a full-day safari and surf lessons that these posts skip.

Flashpacking Family

British family, kids 3 and 5. The most complete set of Sri Lanka posts, and the accommodation list overlaps with this plan.

TraveLynn Family

Two young kids. Itinerary updated Dec 2025.

Mumpack Travel

Single parent with a school-age daughter. Older posts, but practical.

Read with two things in mind

  • Several posts predate the Nov 2025 cyclone. Ignore their train advice for the Kandy stretch and use the rail status link at the top of this page.
  • Hotel prices in the posts are years old. Use them for the feel of a place, not the rate.

Videos worth watching

For getting the kids excited and for seeing the route before you book it. Channel names and titles were checked on 21 Sep 2026; view counts were not. None of these are family-specific, so treat them as scenery and pacing, not as a plan.

Wonders of Sri Lanka · 4K travel guide

Explore World 4k. Your pick. A scenery-led overview of the main sights in 4K, good for a first evening on the sofa with the children.

Itinerary guides

Couples doing the same loop as this plan in two to three weeks. Useful for drive times, what to skip and how Ella, Yala and the south coast actually feel.

The Kandy to Ella train

The single most filmed thing in Sri Lanka. Watch one, then check the rail status link at the top of this page, since the line was cut by the Nov 2025 cyclone.

Cinematic films

No talking, just the island. Five to ten minutes each, the ones to show the kids.

Big channels with Sri Lanka episodes

The best-known travel YouTubers have all been. Individual episode links could not be verified this session, so search each channel for Sri Lanka.
  • Kara and Nate. Multi-episode series including the train, a safari and the south coast. Probably the most watched English-language Sri Lanka vlogs.
  • Lost LeBlanc. Ella, Sigiriya and the surf coast, polished and fast.
  • Drew Binsky. Calls it "the most perfect country". People-focused, including the Vedda community at Mahiyanganaya.
  • Indigo Traveller. Documentary style, filmed during the 2022 economic crisis. Context, not inspiration.
  • Local channels in Sinhala with the largest followings: Travel With Wife, Trip Pisso and Travel With Chatura. Skim them for places the English-language guides miss.

Books

Editions could not be checked online this session. Confirm the year before buying, as several guidebooks have 2023–2025 editions.

Guidebooks

  • The Rough Guide to Sri LankaGavin Thomas. The best-written of the guidebooks, strong on history, the south coast and the hills. First pick for a month-long trip.
  • Lonely Planet Sri LankaThe most current listings. More useful on the road than for planning.
  • Bradt Sri LankaPhilip Briggs. Deepest on wildlife and the cultural triangle, best of the three for Yala and Udawalawe.
  • Turen går til Sri LankaPolitikens Forlag. The Danish option, compact and good for the kids to flip through before departure.

Travel writing and background

  • Elephant Complex: Travels in Sri LankaJohn Gimlette, 2015. The best travel narrative on the island, funny and sharp, and it covers most of this route.
  • Running in the FamilyMichael Ondaatje. Short memoir of a Ceylon childhood, good on Kandy and the hill country.
  • This Divided IslandSamanth Subramanian. Reportage on the civil war, for understanding the north and east you are not visiting.
  • The Village in the JungleLeonard Woolf, 1913. Set near Hambantota, next door to Yala.

For the beach and the jeep

  • The Seven Moons of Maali AlmeidaShehan Karunatilaka, Booker Prize 2022. Also his cricket novel Chinaman.
  • ReefRomesh Gunesekera. Slim, set on the coast, about food and the sea.
  • Island of a Thousand MirrorsNayomi Munaweera.
  • A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Sri Lanka · Sri Lankan WildlifeGehan de Silva Wijeyeratne. Pocket-sized, for the kids to tick off animals in the jeep.
  • Sri Lanka: The Cookbook · Lanka FoodPrakash Sivanathan and Niranjala Ellawala · O Tama Carey. For cooking the trip again at home.
